Why You Need a Packing List
Packing for a trip can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. A well-crafted packing list is your secret weapon against forgotten essentials and overstuffed luggage.
A comprehensive packing list ensures you bring everything you need while avoiding unnecessary items that weigh you down.
Whether you’re jetting off for a weekend getaway or leaving for month-long adventure, a packing list tailored to your destination and activities is invaluable. It helps you stay organized, saves time, and reduces pre-trip anxiety.
Creating a packing list also encourages you to think critically about what you truly need. This mindful approach often leads to packing lighter, more efficiently. You’ll breeze through airports, easily navigate public transportation, and have more flexibility during your travels.

Importance of a packing list
A packing list is your secret weapon for stress-free travel. It helps you stay on top of your belongings and ensures you have everything you need.
Preventing overpacking
Packing lists are your best defense against overpacking. They force you to think critically about what you really need for your trip.
- By writing down each item, you’re less likely to throw in unnecessary extras “just in case.”
- Creating a list helps you visualize your luggage contents before you start packing. This makes it easier to spot redundant items or things you can do without.
- You’ll pack more efficiently, avoiding the temptation to stuff your bags with clothes you won’t wear or gadgets you won’t use.
Reducing stress
A well-prepared packing list can significantly lower your travel anxiety. It gives you peace of mind knowing you haven’t forgotten anything important. No more last-minute panic about whether you packed your passport or phone charger!
- Your list serves as a handy checklist when you’re getting ready to leave and is an important part of making sure you’re ready to depart for your trip.
- This systematic approach reduces the mental load of trying to remember everything.
- For return trips, your packing list helps you gather all your belongings.
- You’re less likely to leave items behind in hotel rooms or vacation rentals. This means fewer frantic calls to recover forgotten items.
Saving money
Believe it or not, a packing list can be a real money-saver. By preventing overpacking, you avoid excess baggage fees at the airport. These hidden travel fees can add up quickly.
A comprehensive list helps you pack more efficiently, potentially allowing you to downsize your luggage. Smaller bags often mean lower checked baggage fees or the ability to fly carry-on only.
Tips for creating your packing list
Destination research
Start by researching your destination thoroughly.
- Are you heading to a city or a remote beach?
- Check local customs and dress codes. Some places may have specific expectations for attire, especially at religious sites.
- Consider any special items you might need, like adapters for electronics or specific medications that may be hard to find abroad.
Considering weather and activities
- Check the weather forecast for your travel dates. Pack clothes suitable for the expected temperatures and conditions.
- Think about your planned activities. Will you need hiking boots, formal wear, or swimsuits?
- Don’t forget versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. I like to pack a variety of neutral bottoms and introduce pops of color in my tops.
Listing essentials first
Here’s how I like to build a new packing list when starting from scratch.
- I start with my travel absolute must-haves: passport, prescription and over-the-counter medications, phone and charger, etc. These items always come first.
- Then I move on to clothing basics like comfortable shoes, a lightweight jacket, and underwear.
- Then I list out the toiletries and any personal care items I use daily.
- Add travel-specific items like a reusable water bottle, a small first-aid kit, and a few plastic storage bags in various sizes. These can be “lifesavers” on the road.
- Then I add in the things that are specific to my trip like clothing specific to any events I’m attending or activities I have planned.
- When necessary I cut back on what I’d like to pack so that I can still travel with just carry-on luggage.
Multi-use items
Maximize space in your luggage by packing items that serve multiple purposes. I love traveling with my Columbia fleece interchange jacket so that I’m (literally) covered for a wide variety of weather.
Consider multi-use toiletries too. Many products come in 2-in-1 formulas, like shampoo and conditioner combos. I love to travel with a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen so that I don’t need to pack both liquid foundation and a face sunscreen.
Packing list creation solutions
There are many ways you can approach creating and personalizing your own packing list. It can be as simple as paper and pen or pencil. I prefer using a digital solution so I don’t have to reinvent the wheel each time I travel.
Lately, I’ve been favoring making my packing list in the free Notion app. Notion makes it easy to duplicate pages and to re-order items on checklists. I like to use notion on both my phone and my laptop. In my experience edits synch very quickly even if I have the app open on both devices.
Using Notion or a spreadsheet for packing makes it easy to re-use packing lists from trip to trip. I keep basic packing lists for different kinds of trips. Here are a few examples.
- Overnight trips
- Weekend getaways
- Trips with a lot of outdoor activities like touring national parks (e.g., my packing list for visiting Yellowstone in the spring)
For those who enjoy working with Google Sheets, the Plan, Ready, Go Travel Packing Spreadsheet is available in my Etsy shop. This spreadsheet includes two tabs: a pre-trip shopping list and a packing list. Both tabs are fully editable and customizable.

Common packing list mistakes to avoid
Creating a packing list is an important part of preparing for your trip, but even with the best intentions, you might make some mistakes.
- Forgetting to include essential items like toiletries or medications. Double-check that these are on your list.
- Overpacking is another frequent misstep. It’s tempting to pack for every possible scenario, but this often leads to lugging around unnecessary weight. Be realistic about what you’ll actually need and use during your trip.
- Not considering your destination’s climate or activities can leave you unprepared. As we’ve already discussed above, research your destination and include appropriate clothing and gear on your list.
- Neglecting to leave room for souvenirs on your return trip.
- Lastly, not updating your packing list after each trip is a missed opportunity. Take a few minutes post-travel to revise your list, removing items you didn’t use and adding anything you wished you’d brought along.
The bottom line
Remember, a good packing list is essential to being well-prepared for your trip. But you don’t have to be rigid with your packing list. You can adjust it based on your travel style and preferences. Keep refining your list after each trip to make future packing faster and even easier.
By using a packing list, you’ll travel lighter and more efficiently. You’ll have everything you need without lugging around unnecessary items. This freedom lets you focus on enjoying your adventures rather than worrying about what you might have forgotten.
Start using a packing list for your next trip. You’ll likely find it becomes an indispensable tool in your travel preparations.
