Create a Resort at Home for Your Staycation

You can boost your staycation by creating a resort at home

For whatever reason, whether it’s finances, time constraints or just because we want to, sometimes you’ll want to do a staycation at home. Staycations are a great way to get a break from your routine and recharge without all the stress and strain of a major trip. You know, the kind where you need a vacation from your vacation? So, embrace the staycation and “level up” your staycation by creating a resort at home.

A relaxing staycation starts in the bedroom

For a truly relaxing staycation, start with your bedroom. I don’t feel like I can truly relax in my bedroom when it’s messy, so I take some time to clean and declutter.

Adding a few extra touches here and there can take your staycation to the next level.

Light some scented candles

My favorite way to quickly create a resort room feel in the bedroom is with scented candles. They have the added bonus of adding romance to the atmosphere as well as providing some much-needed aromatherapy for your staycation.

We love these candles in our house.

Or try an essential oil diffuser

If you want to avoid open flame, but still crave the aromatherapy and relaxation benefits that scented candles bring, perhaps try an essential oil diffuser.

We use this brand of diffuser and love it.

And we buy these essential oils over and over again. You only need a few drops.

Break out your most luxurious bedding

There’s nothing like curling up a cozy and comfortable bed to truly relax.

High-quality cotton sheets like this Amazon’s Choice set will bring that resort bed feel right into your own home.

Add a few amazing pillows like these and you’ll be in business. They’re the top selling pillows on Amazon.

Enjoy breakfast in bed on your resort staycation at home

Enjoying breakfast in bed is a great way to create a resort at home for your staycation.

When you’ve set yourself up with incredibly comfortable bedding, you won’t want to leave…even for breakfast. So, hey, as long as you’re not planning to leave anyway, why not enjoy breakfast in that amazing bed.

To avoid spilling your breakfast all over your awesome bedding make sure you have a set of bamboo trays with foldable legs like these

So you’ve got the perfect trays for breakfast in bed…now you need to trick them out resort style.

This Bodum French press is an Amazon’s Choice item.

But what good is a French press without some amazing coffee? Try Kona coffee for a splash of luxury in your staycation coffee cup. Beware of blends though, what you want is a 100% Hawaiian coffee like this one

Turn your bathroom into a spa

You know how great hotels and resorts have really great bathrooms?

You could knock out a wall to double the size of your bathroom and put in a new spa bath. Just kidding. Well, I mean you could do that, or you could make your bathroom an oasis by adding just a few touches.

These luxury bath products will elevate your bath and shower experience like nothing else.

When you step out of the bath, dry off with Turkish cotton bath towels like these.

And then wrap yourself in this amazing robe. You can try it for free with Prime Wardrobe.

Create a resort in your living room

Get cozy and curl up in front of the fire with a good book…or watch your favorite movie with your boo.

Or light some candles and get under a luxurious throw like this one

Flameless pillar candles are also a great option. These come with a remote control.

Don’t overlook the kitchen

I have to admit one of my favorite parts of doing a staycation is making sure that I have all my favorite things to eat and drink stocked up in the house.

Coffee, tea and hot chocolate

We love and recommend our Keurig single cup coffee maker. We love how you can customize each cup. Hubby drinks decaf and I drink regular. Plus, you can choose your cup size and coffee strength. Extra strong and black for me please!

If you’re like my mom and you enjoy a good cup of tea, try this electric kettle to get you the perfect cup every time. It’s the #1 best seller on Amazon and offers automatic shutoff.

We discovered this amazing hot chocolate on our trip to Colonial Williamsburg. It’s a little fussy to make (no instant packets here!), but I promise you it is totally worth it. In fact, it’s so popular that it sells out in Williamsburg during peak times there. We had to order ours on Amazon after we got home from our trip.

“Special” treats

Treat yourself to those special snacks that you never buy for yourself on your regular shopping trips. For me and hubby, that’s things like:

Make meals easy

Make staycation meal times easy on yourself by preparing for them ahead of time. I’m the kind of person who enjoys eating the fruits of my cooking labors but I don’t enjoy the actual cooking.

To make my staycation extra relaxing I love to make extras when I cook dinner and freeze the leftovers so that I can just pull them out of the freezer for dinner.

Take out and meal delivery are also great options if you want to treat yourself or splash out a little for a special meal.

Extend your relaxing staycation outdoors

Take your resort staycation outdoors with a fire pit.

Enjoy some relaxing outside time. You can create an simple outdoor living space with some adirondack chairs and a fire pit.

These Adirondack chairs are weather resistant and fold for easy storage.

You can build your own fire pit or go the simple route and buy one like this. It’s free standing and comes with a spark screen and a poker

And don’t forget the marshmallow roasting sticks!

When you feel a nap coming on and a it’s a beautiful day outside there’s not much better than a hammock.

How can I do a staycation at home?

To have a truly relaxing staycation, you’ll need to get in a vacation mindset.

  • Block the staycation off on your calendar just like for a regular vacation.
  • Unplug from work just as if you were leaving town. Tell your co-workers that you’re on vacation…because you are.
  • Take care of regular household chores and errands before your staycation so that you can truly relax while you’re at home.
  • Spend some time ahead planning for things you’d like to do on your staycation whether that’s doing some local day trips or activities at home.

It’s all about mindset.

What do you need for a staycation?

The beauty of a staycation is that you can make it whatever you want.

Want to be a tourist in your own area and see the top local sites? Go for it.

Have a hankering to try the newest and hottest restaurants everyone’s raving about? Make it happen.

In need of some mental and emotional health recharging even if it means hiding away from others for a little while? That’s great too.

It’s your staycation. Make it what you need it to be.

Here are some of my favorite ideas:

  • Stock up on your favorite foods and snacks. You know, the things that maybe you only eat on vacations or holidays.
  • Budget some money for dinner takeout or delivery…or if you’re on a strict budget, prepare some meals ahead of time and put them away in the freezer so that all you need to do is heat them up.
  • Select some movies or TV shows you’ve been wanting to binge but haven’t had the time for, or perhaps even do a marathon of your favorite movie series.
  • Choose some beach reads to enjoy while hanging out in your backyard.
